Review # 1 was written on 2013-08-06 00:00:00 Fumiki Osaka This book forsaw our current problems with the end of cheap energy as part of the end of the long boom of Western Civilization. The boom lasted from the easy availability of land and resources with the opening of the Great Frontier (the Americas, southern Africa and Australia) to Europeans in 1493 till the ending of easy access to land with the closing of the frontier in the 1890s, and now the end of easy access to cheap energy. His underlying thesis is that our current modern civilization was created in that boom, and with the ending of the boom, civilization will evolve. Our assumptions that democracy will continue to spread, that material conditions will continue to improve, and that lifespans will continue to grow are all based on the boom conditions. |
