Review # 1 was written on 2015-01-02 00:00:00 Jaime Ryan Heintz I got so much from this book. I will probably be reading it again someday. I especially loved the first half. Once it started talking about the railroad I got less interested, but then it picked up again after that. This gave me a lot more understanding in regard to my pioneer ancestors- why they moved around so much, what they must have felt and gone through after they got to Utah, etc. I think sometimes we focus so much on the months of the actual trek without giving much thought to what they experienced once they reached "Zion." When I saw how hard they had it even though they had followed God's command to emigrate, I realized I can get through my trials, too. A very interesting read to me. As a side note, I read it because I was sitting in Stake Conference and the Holy Ghost whispered that I needed to read it. I thought that was very strange because why would I "need" to read an economic history of the Mormons? I'm certainly glad I did, and I can't even enumerate the reasons why. |
