Review # 1 was written on 2016-06-09 00:00:00 Stuart Graff Cristina Peri Rossi is an Uruguayo writer who went into exile in 1972 (the height of the military's dirty wars) so i was expecting passion. I guess it is also reasonable for an exile's writing to become dry, sardonic, bitter? Or as one GR reviewer stated re these stories: "some are not useless". This is a small book of vignettes - not really stories - many of which just try way too hard and you feel embarrassed in place of the writer. Well, i did. f'instance: "The rest of the block was taken up by a gargantuan supermarket, like some antediluvian animal." Huh? or: "...like fossils, like Venus' belly button, like petrels seen in silhouette." And, no, the rest of the sentence would NOT have clarified. This wee tome is just not worth your precious time. |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-06-23 00:00:00 Michael Garcia I was sure I'd like this, but you know what they say about being sure... It makes a SHHH out of R and E. Anyway, I found the writing to be too precise and lacking in depth. It was like trying to read a very varnished and shellacked piece of wood. I couldn't keep my mind concentrated on the words, because there wasn't anything to hold onto but description. |
