Because one writes dialogs doesn't mean it's going to be a play. This is soundbite philosophy at its greatest. It takes well known phrases and alters them for the context of the play while terribly changing their original meaning. Examples from the book; "hell is in yourself, it is not Other people", "one is not born a Muslim woman, one becomes a Muslim woman." The book strongly contradicts things that both philosophers tied to their thinking, neither believed in heaven yet both within the play are coming back from heaven to visit a funeral. In the play Sartre says, "Terrorism against innocent civilians has never solved anything." Yet Sartre was extremely vocal about his support on the terrorist attack in the 1972 Olympics. He support the Algerian revolution and the terrorist activity that came with it. This is easily the worst book I've read all year, do yourself a favor and save the hour it would take to read it and read something worthwhile from the two philosophers that they actual wrote.

I like this play a lot. I've never seen it performed, but the idea of it, is powerful. What if Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir came back to life and went to meet ISIS? Existentialism meets radical Islamists. Very interesting text. I think it shows some of the huge divide, maybe unresolvable divide between the West and the legacies of the imperial traumas they left behind in Africa. It's fun to even just talk about this play, and people are usually interested in hearing about it.
