Sadly the title, Recipes with History, is misleading. I was expecting historical recipes and instead found modern recipes interspersed with snippets of historical information. The contributors have family links with the American Revolution and some have included their stories also, but their recipes include such modern American ingredients as 'frosted flakes', a sugary breakfast cereal. There is some fascinating history, like the story of Molly Pitcher who helped her husband man the cannon during the battle of Monmouth and ended up with a damaged petticoat when a British cannonball flew between her legs (p. 27), but there are also historical misconceptions such as the idea that a wake was held to see if a dead person was really in a coma and might wake up (p. 29). A good editor would also have improved it. Whilst I might be tempted to try some of the recipes, a lot I wouldn't bother with.

Soon after I began teaching, the education world became aflutter with standards. At first, NCTM took ownership of mathematical standards. It sounds reasonable given mathematics teachers are the ones working with the children who are learning. Twenty years later, standards are being written by groups tied to governors. We seem to be going in the wrong direction. There's a lot of good information here that helped craft my approach to teaching mathematics. Unfortunately, it is not presented particularly well The layout of the book is not user-friendly. For a mathematics text, one expects a more straightforward approach. At least I do. As I have said throughout my career, one plus one still equals two. Why we continue to re-invent the wheel with reorganizing this information is lost upon me. Of course, I am merely a classroom teacher; it is not like I have anything to offer.
