Review # 1 was written on 2010-02-19 00:00:00 Jason Parks I keep wanting to refer to it as "How Kate Jackson Married Nancy Wilson" but Twain didn't write for tabloids. I picked this up thinking I might read one or two of the stories in this compilation, but the stories are funny, a little dated, but well-written. A collection of stories of brave women and bold girls. A couple stories flirt with transvestism, same-sex marriage (one, a "shotgun" wedding) There's suggestions of sodomy even. This is bold writing. several of the stories, such as "Eve's Diary" are too cute, playing easily, but unevenly with contemporary knowledge and the imagined wonderment of Eden. Even this piece though, ending with Adam's poignant oneline summation of his partner, shows an author who moved easily between the absurd, the profound and the points in between. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-01-02 00:00:00 HEATHER ROSENBERG A hotchpot of Twain's heroines, some relatively well developed, others clearly in the draft stages. Little Bessie was a gem that would've been a worthy addition to Mark Twain on the Bible and Hellfire Hotchkiss showed great potential- a pity he never finished it. Eve's Diary was a terrific piece; my favorite in this collection. The title was a bit misleading- there was nothing rebellious or daring in Nancy Jackson's marriage to Kate Wilson and some of the historical fiction (Medieval Romance, Lucretia Smith's Soldier, Horse's Tale) seemed more like an exercise than a labor of love. Overall, most of it was middling Twain- still worth reading and always well-written, but most of it not memorable. |
