Gonzalo Grabs the Good Life by Janice Levy, is a book about a rooster named Gonzalo who wins the lottery and decides to leave the farm he works at. Gonzalo decides he must live the good life after all he did win the lottery so he buys all sorts of luxury. Eventually Gonzalo runs out of money and he realizes he is not actually living the good life. After singing at a church and having a bad dream Gonzalo decides to go back to the farm because really that is his good life. A major theme in this book is appreciating what you have and also to live a good life with what truly makes you happy. I personally really enjoyed this book. There is humor in the story but also with a valuable lesson. The illustrations cover each corner on each page and are very colorful. This book can be aimed to a young and also older audience. School wise I believe it could be used in grades K-5. I definitely recommend this book, Gonzalo is quite the character that children can grow to really like. He is definitely a cool rooster who learned a lesson and actually learns to value what he had before all the luxury. When this book is introduced the students could be asked what do they consider a good life after reading this book as well.

The kids and I both enjoyed this story about a rooster that didn't recognize the good life he had until he didn't have it any longer. The pictures in this book seemed to have a little bit of a muddy palette--both kids had some problems making out what was going on in the pictures. At one point my niece wanted to know why Gonzalo ate candy as his primary food in his good life (he did not escape the consequences of this dietary choice), and my nephew straightened her out. "Well," he said, "candy is a delicious food." Fun, funny book that suggests to kids that maybe we already have what we seek.
