It takes a lot for a collection to earn five stars from me. There's generally a few bad apples in the bunch. In this book I went from interested to amazed though. This book is just great for looking at Christian belief in the modern age. The thinkers here are clear and speak directly to the coming or potential status of Christianity in our time. The way it was edited, with respective theologians taking on their area of expertise, was comprehensive and sensible. A bit of warning. This book does feature mostly thinkers of the small-c catholic tradition. There is a definite Anglican, Catholic and orthodox Reform bend to this. It also leans to more "progressive" notions of Christianity. That is not to say I'd discourage anyone from reading it. Those who are sympathetic to those nebulous fields I mentioned will get something out of this, and those who aren't will find a worthy challenge to their beliefs. A great book for those outside of the Christian faith who want an intelligent exposition of belief.

Wow! I've really enjoyed reading these interviews with contemporary Christian thinkers. I came at the book knowing that I wanted to get deeper into Christianity - what it is and where it's at - and have come away with clear ideas for deeper study. It's been refreshing to encounter people who are fully convinced as to the validity of the Christian faith in relation to life in the world. One thing that struck me is how many of the people interviewed were returning to engage with texts by Augustine, Aquinas and Patristic writers. Recommended ;)
