The reason that I gave this book 3 stars was that it did not have something that would have kept a readers attention. However the facts and the historical background about the segregation in America before they had gone in the war. It had shown how even though the country could get sucked in to a massive war they are still refusing from letting blacks join the military. It continues to show how they had started letting blacks join the military as an "experiment" which was something that had been interesting.

The author's purpose in writing this book is to inform. This is made clear throughout the book by the way that the author emphasizes straight facts to the reader. The book is in chronological order from when black African Americans had no right to be able to fly, to when they made history. The theme of the book is that race doesn't determine anything. Many people were against African Americans flying planes. Discrimination was huge during this time period, which is ridiculous. The author names the people who were against the African American flight programs, which shows he is against the racism. The style the book was written in was a description. The author made this very effective because the author wrote about a particular time, place and event in history. While reading this book, it is very hard to put down. The facts are very interesting, and it's very interesting learning about the history of the different flights. My opinion is that this is a very good book to read because it taught me all of the different facts that went on during World War ll. Although much discrimination went on during this time period, people found a way to make it so they could get their own flight program in Tuskegee, Alabama in order to be a part of a flight group. One of the things that I do not like about the book is how sometimes it gets repetitive and it can easily bore the reader. I like how there are many different subjects that go on during the book. It does not just focus on one aspect of this time period. It shows two different point of views- one from the white discrimination group and one from the African American's standpoint. If I could change this book, I would make it so it is broken down better into chapters so it's easier to find information if someone is researching. I enjoyed this book thoroughly, but it is like no book I have read before.
