Review # 1 was written on 2007-11-05 00:00:00 Mai Noon It's hard to rate his book. The selection is intended to represent 25 years of the Johns Hopkins poetry series, and it may well do that. I can judge it by the poets included, some of whom appealed and some of whom did not. Some poets left me puzzling over their poetry, trying to decide if I liked what they wrote and how they wrote. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I was glad to be done with it. I intend to read more of certain poets included in the book, which was the intent of the book's editor. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-10-03 00:00:00 Nick Stasio I appreciated hearing the voices of the individuals that wrote their stories, which are collected here. The various authors wrote with varying skill, but all were genuine and interesting. I found it powerful to hear about the sad and horrific facts of a slave's life related in a straightforward manner. It was interesting to see how the individuals here managed to continue living their lives as best as possible under very difficult circumstances. I found the last selection difficult to follow, but still appreciated the sections that described events in the author's life. |
