(Schuchman, 103). One wonders what Schuchman, and his family, would have thought or published about the state of film and television about and through the Deaf lens today. Although he passed in 2017, I am sure he saw enough change in how the Deaf community is viewed on the silver and television screen (but still wanted to see more as a lifelong member of the community as a CODA, and professor at Gallaudet University). I found this account, although published in the late 1980s, to be highly informative not only about the history of the Deaf image and stigmas associated with it on film, but of film history too. As someone who has a degree in both (or will by the spring of 2021) it sparked and pleased all of the interests and passions. I look forward to further exploring the filmography at the end of the book (and watching it grow in the years to come)! One hopes that scholars of the film industry and of the history of disabilities will pick up where Schuchman left off. I would like to be part of the team as a hearing ally and advocate, and would adore seeing names of my future Deaf and Hard of Hearing students as part of the list's historians, and as part of the cast and crew of the films that are included on those future lists! |
