Hard to rate this book. Writing-wise, it's definitely four stars. Since I rate books mainly on how much I enjoyed them, I can only give it two stars. It's an unhappy book with no real glimmers of hope or happiness in it for the generations of characters. It was just a bit too dark and sad for me.

There are a couple of things that I liked about the book - oral story telling, repetition style, legacy and how that gets passed down to generations on both sides of the family. Both sides are stuck in the relationship and cursed. Ernest tried to get out but disappeared, Coyle also tried but couldn't I think it is because he had same mind frame as slavers ( somewhat) and money from plantation can't be used for his freedom. What I don't like - I wanted China to change that legacy and get out instead of continuing it. Wanted her and her granddaughter to be more developed and not shells. They are too one sided don't have lives outside the plantation and the stories of the past...like sex once just to conceive one kid to pass story too...
