Review # 1 was written on 2015-02-16 00:00:00 Andrew Lindsten Ralph Barton Perry selected these essays and extracts of James' work to demonstrate "his consistant preoccupation with moral questions" and "the consistency of his thoughts in that field." I read this while still living in Grinnell, Iowa, around the time that the college's religion department funded a trip to Union Theological Seminary in New York--the ticket data which appears on the inside back cover. The reading of it probably occurred both in Iowa and NYC. As ever, James was a delight. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-09-30 00:00:00 SAMUEL SWEET 4 stars for the obvious thought that went into these essays and for the really good ones(blindness was my favorite). There were some that I breezed through because I didn't really care(war and moral philosophy, being 2 of them) but there were others that I enjoyed. He definitely liked the old-fashioned "state the fact or conclusion then give twenty stories that prove said conclusion" style. It's not bad but can get repetitive. |
