John Collins is the author of the Old Testament textbook used by Education for Ministry. As I read more of what he writes, and note how helpfully he is referenced in my other readings as well, my respect for him grows. His breadth of research and knowledge makes his work a needful resource. This is a collection of essays that addresses current theological issues, very deeply researched, very well-balanced approach. I am completely on board with his essay on critical biblical theology, perhaps one of the clearest treatments I've seen. Once or twice I felt I could not go where he was leading in his discussions on eschatology, but that is often the case in critical reading, which feeds ongoing conversations. I'm not sure that some of these essays, necessarily academic in language, can reach a very general audience, but that was not the aim of his writing here. I am likely to read more of his work as I go.
