Review # 1 was written on 2009-04-25 00:00:00 Tom Dale A good thorough overview on turtles, both in terms of care as well as in general. If thinking about getting a turtle, consult this book first. If still interested after reading it, then obtain references that are more in depth in terms of proper husbandry for the species that you select.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-05-06 00:00:00 Kazuhito Nakamura I bought this book about a year ago. I lost it when I moved my household in November 2011, and found it at the beginning of May 2012. The author has an engaging style, and I definitely learned a lot about turtles. I have two red eared sliders, and this book told me how to better care for them, and that I bought the wrong type of tank. Some of the photography is great, and others were a bit fuzzy and dark. The author brings to mind several things that I would never have thought of when I acquired my Red-Eared Sliders. This book although I have just finished the book, I have already adopted some of the approaches to care the author recommended. This had made caring for Kunta Kinte (we call him Toby) and Jordy LaForge much easier. Also, Kirkpatrick brings up the issue of turtle longevity, which I really had not considered. I'll be amending my will, as it is highly likely that I'll be bequeathing the wonderful animals. The last chapter really is a showcase for the scientific acumen of the author. It was fascinating to read about the different types of turtles that people keep as pets, their natural history, and suitability for pets. I liked the practicle advice offered earlier in the book, but the overview of other turtle species was really interesting.
