Review # 1 was written on 2009-08-13 00:00:00 Marte Eyre A comprehensive ethnography of the events surrounding the disaster in Bhopal India after the catastrophe at the Union Carbide chemical plant. Fortun does an excellent job of giving the perspectives of multiple groups ranging from the workers, to women, to US lawyers fighting for the people's rights (even if it was for their own personal benefit). A great read for anyone interested in environmental disaster and its far reaching impacts. |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-02-13 00:00:00 Michelle Huele I picked this up and put it down again a few times, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Very thoughtful and worthwhile ethnography discussing the Bhopal disaster from many perspectives. The book tackles not just the disaster but the many reactions to it: across time (immediately after and in the years and decades that follow), across communities (in India and the U.S), and from many perspectives. |
