A really good selection of essays on the works of Dickens. Particularly good were "Fictions of childhood" by Robert Newsom, "Fictions of the city" by Murray Baumgarten and "Gender, family and domestic ideology" by Catherine Waters. All very academic, but most still very readable.

I read this book because I am writing my thesis on Dickens so this was definitely a lot of help. It was better than reading a long biography in that it helped me understand other aspects of Dickens even if I am not working with them (like Dickens in Theatre or in Film) which helped me create a better picture of Dickens and understand his work better. Besides it was enjoyable and fairly easy to read (it wasn't torture) and very informative.
