Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-09 00:00:00 Anthony Thomas I liked this book a good deal, but wanted to like it more; although it came out in 2001, the most recent of its discussions came from the mid eighties, making the book feel a bit dated. I like the idea that non poets need to be reading poetry and talking about poetry, and that the language of contemporary criticism is antithetical to discussions of contemporary poetry, but I would like to have seen him done more, reached deeper with a thesis of how to give critics a means into the poem. Still, McGuiness is a smart, thoughtful, and engages contemporary poetry thoroughly in ways most critics do not. |
