The book John Lennon by Bruce W. Conrad published by Chelsea House Publishers with the copyright date of 1994, follows the life of the famous Beatle, John Lennon. Lennon traveled to many parts of the world, but the book is mainly set in England and the United States. There are also some important parts in other countries such as when he traveled to India for transcendental meditation and when his band first started out playing clubs in Hamburg, West Germany which led to their widened reputation and first recording. John Lennon created his band out of a love for music, but being so famous took a toll on him. He wasn't used to all the attention and he actually felt guilty for it. Lennon began feeling very bored and lonely during his rise to stardom. He began speaking out against the war and also said that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus", which made many fans extremely upset to the point of burning their records. Lennon later apologized for this but became increasingly frustrated with the fact that he was often changing his actions to please others. He was bored with his family life and lacked musical inspiration, so he began a relationship with Yoko Ono leading to the divorce of his wife Cynthia. John had always been drawn to transcendental mediation, and had traveled to India a few times to do so. Yoko Ono also enjoyed this. John had had trouble using LSD in the past and began using it again along with an increasing amount of marijuana while with Yoko. Yoko Ono was an artist and she met John at an art show. After they started a relationship she began playing music as well and recorded a few albums with John, and was always in the studio when the Beatles were practicing or recording so they could be near each other. They were both against the Vietnam War and participated in many protests, putting Lennon back in the media after the Beatles had nearly stopped talking to each other. The pair separated for a brief time, until Yoko realized she couldn't be as famous or make as much money without John. After this John became a house husband and Yoko took over the finances. John had a hard childhood. His dad served in World War 2 and when he came back his parents divorced. Lennon was a very hostile child and got expelled from kindergarten. His parents forced him to pick which of them he would live with, bye chose his mother. But after he made his decision, his mother took him to his aunts to be raised. He never saw his father and rarely saw his mother for a long time. John was very rebellious but his aunt was strict. Later on his uncle who he was very close to, died which devastated him. After this he began seeing his mother more often and they had a closer relationship, but then she died in a car accident shortly afterwards when John was still a teenager. Overall this was a very well written biography. It didn't seem to have any bias and was very q and specific. The books chapters are organized very well. There are many pictures and captions in bold about the important parts. It includes interviews from John as well as band and family members which help to evolve the story. There are many dates which are organized into a timeline at the end. An index is also included to locate specific parts. There's also a list of books for further reading. The moral of the story is that fame often leads to the destruction of a person. Fame caused John to feel lonely, bored, and fake. Many people used him to get what they wanted. Everything he said or did was picked apart by the media and he had no privacy. His ended up getting divorced from his first wife and not having s relationship with his first son. He lost many of his friends and his relationship with the other band members became very bitter. Drug use took over his life and he lacked inspiration. Most devastatingly he was shot and killed, all because of fame. So I give this give this book a 4 out of 10.
