Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-08 00:00:00 Mark Hersch Asked to accompany Napoleon on his Egyptian campaign, the artist Vivant Denon discovered a world few people had seen. Through his incomparable drawings he introduced the world to the mysteries of Egypt. Magnificent drawings of many ruins now lost to time.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-08-15 00:00:00 Tiffany Krone I've dipped into this over the years but never read the whole thing before. Why, I can't say, but I'm very glad to have read it now. It is packed with interesting history and a veritable smorgasbord of obsessive and passionate people. And he's very funny! I probably will never go to Egypt but travelling by book is deeply satisfying too. I will happily find his other books and feel very sad to find he died this year.
