An excellent introduction to Anne Frank and her family history that can be helpful both to students gaining first exposure to Anne and to students ready to read Anne's diary. The diary doesn't provide a lot of background information about the Frank's flight from Germany to Holland, their family dynamics (beyond Anne's perspective), the risks those helping them took, or the outcomes after the war. This account sketches in those missing details, providing single sitting accessibility to the context of Anne's writing.

I read this book on my Kindle, and this is my review: Brenda Lewis wrote this accessible chapter book about Anne Frank's life. The book begins by giving some background on what Anne's life as a Jewish person was like before World War II and then describes how Anne's life changed when Nazi Germany invaded the rest of Europe. Although Anne's living conditions under Nazi rule were terrifying and tragic, Brenda Lewis wrote this book in a way that celebrates the courage, creativity and hope of the characters despite the fact that they lived in hiding from the SS Nazi police. A child could read this book and gain insight and into Anne's compelling life story without feeling overwhelmed by graphic details of pain and suffering. The end of the book honors Anne's legacy by empowering the reader to remember this tragedy so as not to repeat it. This book is part of a series of books called, "DK Readers." The books are leveled 1-5. Level 1 is the easiest, and level 5 is the hardest. The, Story if Anne Frank, is leveled a 3. It is written for children in third grade and up. The book has seven chapters, a glossary and an index. It is a manageable way for young readers to become familiar with the format of informational texts and with an inspirational true story of a child, who persevered under devastating oppression.
