This is a lovely, gentle, fun, quick-read young adult book. Set in a guest house in a small town in the north of Britain, a single mom, Mary struggles to make ends meet, help by 12 year old daughter Beth. They take in Beths cousin, Tanya, 12, because her mother is sick, and she disrupts everything, with her black clothes, piercings, hostility to authority and Cockney accent. Turns out she has been studying magic, and a malevolent warlock, Mr. Mandrake, comes to find the seer stone that Mary has inherited. Conflict and spell ensue, as the girls are first taken in by Mandrake, and as Tanya fights to keep the stone away. The setting is clearly drawn and captivating. The girls fighting and gutlessness is true to preadolescence. And author Henderson, creates a believable world of magic, where humans must struggle with their power and human emotions. I liked it a lot.
