Review # 1 was written on 2013-05-19 00:00:00 Edward Thomas Recently,I was in Abiquiú, New Mexico to tour Georgia O'Keeffe's house and studio. While exploring Abiquiú, I met Napoleon Garcia who provides tourist information from his home on the plaza. He worked off and on for O'Keeffe for over 40 years and while he does relate stories about the artist, the most interesting parts of the book are about his life, and the Genizaros of New Mexico.(a good definition and history of the Genizaros can be found at This book is part of the series "Stories from New Mexico Villages" and it is clear the love he has for Abiquiú, its traditions and even it's celebrity as the home of one of America's iconic artists. Full of wonderful photographs of his family, the village and the landscapes that inspired O'Keeffe. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-08-01 00:00:00 Eric Kole like the other reviews here on Goodreads, i only came across this book because i visited the village of Abiquiu while on a recent holiday in New Mexico. i suspect that is the best way to find, and truly appreciate, this personal account of Napoleon Garcian (the genizaro) and Geogria O'Keeffe (the artist). visiting Abiquiu, seeing the church Morada del Alto (with the three wooden crosses), Chama River and especially Plaza Blanc -all subjects of her paintings- was truly a wonderful experience which was made more complete by reading this simple, honest lovely little book. |
