This is one of those titles that has been hanging around the library, not getting checked out in ages (if ever). I've been drawn to books like this for a while now, having read various works about the funeral industry, and of course, Mary Roach's Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. I figured I'd take this home, see what it was about. Interestingly, it's not really like the other books. It's a much more personal look at the death industry, as the author is trying to decide/plan his own funeral. Being over 50, and thus on the downhill slide, he's feeling the pressure to make sure things are done for his final arrangements. Problem is, he's not really sure what he wants done - so he visits many in the industry to get some insight. I love that he uses monikers only, such as The Wood Turner, The Abenacki, The Undertaker, The Gravedigger. There are no proper names here, so these people could be anyone (although with some, there's enough clues that a quick Internet search would give you the name). It's a great little book, probably because it reflects how many of us feel. Burial or cremation? Leave it all to a funeral director, or have the family more involved? Donate organs? Donate body to science? Wander off somewhere extremely remote and hope no one ever finds you? What type of music for the service? Should there be a service at all? What about a celebration of life? Open or closed casket (if you're using one)? So many questions, so much to think about. And of course, after one is dead, there's no guarantee that one will have one's wishes honored - after all, what comes after one dies is for the living. Highly recommend.
