If there's one overarching message of the book it is that there is zero evidence, scientific or otherwise, that chemical imbalances in the brain exist. The author shows over and over there is no way to measure chemical levels in a living brain and no data on what is and is not an acceptable level of any brain chemical. Consequently, there is no proof that any of the so-called mental illnesses attributed to such imbalances are real diseases requiring drug therapy. Additionally, the book amply shows that none of the makers of the psychotropic drugs designed to treat these supposed illnesses have any hard data showing how these drugs actually work - though there is plenty of data on the negative, often fatal side-effects of many of them. If you're interested in how the pharmaceutical industry works, how the mental health profession works or even how the process of gaining FDA approval for a new drug works, this books will be a wealth of information for you. I'd also recommend this book to anyone who's been told they have a "disease" caused by a chemical imbalance in their brain. Do yourself a favor and fill a prescription for this book before you fill one for anything else.

As someone who lives with mental health (bipolar, ptsd, anxiety) who is also a consumer advisor and works in policy I found this book to be a very interesting read. I have read a few books that challenge big pharmaceutical and the main discorse in mental health but they have tended to be based on personal experience or get dismissed as conspiracy based. This book is well researched and includes quotes from the FDA, the pharmaceutical companies and notable psychiatrists, some who have been recognized by the APA While I was aware that the chemical imbalance theory had been disproven I was not aware how far big pharmaceutical are still pushing it. I was also aware of the "black box warnings" and some of the risks associate with medication but the extent that big pharmaceutical has gone to hide this is unbelievable.
