I read through this as a teenager trying to avoid pregnancy. It was really frustrating that they would talk around inducing a miscarriage, and let you know what herbs you should avoid when you are pregnant, but just say it "could be dangerous". I understand not being able to just give accurate info for liability reasons, but it drove me nuts. I later got a zine called Wive's Tales that had detailed instructions on inducing your period when you're a week or two late. It's a cool book, just more focused on watering your plants with menstrual blood. But I was 13 when I read it, so go figure about what I've retained!

This book was recommended to me as a great women's herbal, and for the most part, it is. As with many herbals, the language and ideas are colorful and left-of-center, but that's part of it's charm. If you are looking for a strictly rational, medical approach to herbalism, you certainly won't find it here! Rather, this book is very human, mixing artwork, dreams, emotions, societal influences and of course, herbs and their uses and contraindications. I admit that I would have rated this higher, but I took issue with one of the ideas she introduced at the end, which kind-of ruined the rest of the book for me.
