It's a curious little book I picked up for some background reading. It present the author's ideas about what a woman's education needed to contain, with due respect being paid to the feebleness of her tiny brain (LOL ;D). The necessary subjects are briefly described, and their list is rather extensive, considering the state of female education at the time (it includes English grammar and composition, foreign languages, geography, history, mathematics, rudiments of science, needlework, music, art and dancing). Needless to say, deep learning of any subject - except sewing and perhaps other ornamental skills - is not recommended. Particular attention is paid to the moral and religious aspect of upbringing. Still, the education seems rather comprehensive and, surprisingly, reading novels is not prohibited(!). Also, at the end of the book there is a list of books that were considered suitable and decent for a late 18th-early 19th century classroom and general reading. So if you wish to find out the basics of what a girl really learned at a boarding school, this is the book for you.

A nice historical work on an innovative idea not always touched upon in history. The book is written by Erasmus Darwin, the lesser-known grandfather of Charles Darwin, a physician and biologist with novel viewpoints on many aspects of society, including his ideas of evolution and early equality. This book contains some negative depictions and descriptions of women, due to its time of origin in the 1798, but the idea of education for both sexes that it highlights is beyond its years.
