If you have looked at medieval illuminated manuscripts, this book is great. The paintings are real medieval illuminations from books such as various Books of Hours held at a variety of libraries and museums, but with the people replaced by cats. I was a little slow figuring the book out - I had purchased it at a Friends of the Library booksale and for $2 it was cute. Then as I took a couple of classes on illuminated manuscripts, I realized that some of the pictures looked familiar. I started searching online at the repository sources listed opposite each painting in the book. And broke out laughing. Every one of the paintings that I searched for is a historic painting...with a little editing of faces, hands, etc. Susan Herbert did a great job of putting a feline twist into some very old, beautiful illuminated manuscript paintings. Friends who are familiar with the type of painting have also thought the book is great. Some of the comments from other reviewers seem to be based on not realizing that the style is an actual historic style of painting. If anyone has seen actual illuminated manuscripts, they know that they are gorgeous pieces of art.

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting with this book, but it wasn't this. Perhaps I was hoping for a little more humor. Or, if not humor, a stronger art element. Imagine the classic "Dogs Playing Poster" image. Not put cats into the picture. Now, make it medieval-themed. That's this book. At first glance, it's cute. For those of us who are cat people, there's a certain amount of "Ahh," element. But as we look a little more we realize that the art only suggests a medieval style (with cats inserted) rather than truly looking like the proper era. The cats depicted also lack any emotion or even implied emotion in the paintings (I know, I know...they're CATS ... but when painted in such anthropomorphic manner, they should be conveying a sense of something. Again ... it will get an, "Ahh, that's cute," response from some, but this won't delve beyond that. Is it worth it? Not in my book, but perhaps for some.
