Review # 1 was written on 2019-11-21 00:00:00 Linda Rudy Fairly wide-ranging, though not intended to be the final word on the subject. (And finally someone discusses who Piozzi was and why I might care.) I do love a well-marked-up book, especially marked by children (cue humorous example of curly lines added to the mouths of animals and people in Peter Parley's Story of the Trapper and a volume of Youth's Friend and Scholar's Magazine--both 1829). A pleasant companion and an easy and entertaining read that doesn't take itself overly seriously, with random endnotes and a separate bibliography; thank you, Yale, for not forcing me to constantly scan back through pages of endnotes in a frustrating effort to uncover publishing info for an interesting book. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-09-29 00:00:00 Michael Dann This book was the foundation for my term paper on marginalia. It is the definitive work on the subject, filled with fascinating anecdotes and analysis. It is, however, short on statistics or data analysis (admittedly so). I recommend it for anyone interested in the history of books or the history of reading. You'll be engrossed! |
