State occupational outlooks handbook. (1997). Detroit, MI: Cengage Gale. Citation by: Jenni O'Guin Type of Reference: Handbook Call Number: Ref 331.1 Content/Scope: This 750 page handbook explores the differences in job earnings potential and career outlook across different states. Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Gale is a division of Cengage and is a very reputable company, helping libraries and learners for more than 60 years. Arrangement/Presentation: Arrangement is alphabetical by state. A list of occupations can be found alphabetically in the index. It is a hardback book of over 750 pages in length. Relation to other works: This handbook is a good supplement to other occupational handbooks since this one goes into detail about how jobs differ across state lines. At the high school level, most students are constantly thinking about their future and some need help in determining what occupation is right for them. Since our high school is located where three states come together, some students may choose to move to and work in Illinois or Indiana. Even Missouri and Tennessee are not too far away. Knowing that the same job may pay more in one state than another can influence their decision. Accessibility/Diversity: This book takes into consideration that not all students will go to college, get a four year (or more) degree and earn six figures. Many different types of jobs are represented here. Cost: $130.00 Professional Review: Booklist Online. (1998). Retrieved from

A little outdated, but prefer giving this as a first encyclopedia to my son than the truncated version for kids.
