Call Number: Ref 302 Brief Description: The newest version of this ubiquitous, relentlessly utilitarian encyclopedia records statistical and other changes in the geopolitical world since the 2007 edition. Notably, along with numerous minor tweaks, additions include optimistic new entries for Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Palestinian Territories, plus analyses of the events and effects of the world economic crisis and the Arab Spring through the first quarter of 2012. Retrieved from Criteria: Content Scope: This encyclopedia focuses on statistics of nations around the world and how they interconnect with each other. It also basis predictions off of historical information for future events in various parts of the world. Accuracy, Authority, and Bias: The articles are written by multiple authors and offer varying perspectives of issues on which the authors are authorities. Arrangement and Presentation: The encyclopedia is in order of countries and regions alphabetically and offers an index in which the user can find information quickly. Relation to Similar Works: Although there are similar items in the collection, none have as much depth on statistical analysis in as many countries around the world as this particular encyclopedia does. Timeliness and Permanence: This is a recent publication and offers the most up-to-date information available through the first quarter of 2012. Statistics change yearly, however, so it is likely this encyclopedia will need to be replaced in coming years. Accessibility and Diversity: This encyclopedia emphasizes global diversity incorporating articles from countries around the world. It is recommended for 8th grade and up which makes it accessible to older middle school students. Cost: $556.80

Reviewed by: Kelly Cundiff Reference Type: Encyclopedia Call Number: 910.3 ISBN 13: 978-1-4144-3392-9 Content/Scope: Covers 194 countries and the United Nations discussing everything from the physical layout of each country to the social and economic climate in each country. Accuracy/Authority/Bias: This set has been in publication since 1960 with this being the 13th edition. Seen as a great one-stop source for information from around the world. Arrangement/Presentation: Broken down into 201 articles in five volumes with charts and graphs and an index that make it visually appealing and easy to search for information. They are also arranged both geographically by region and alphabetically by region. Relation to similar works: With so much of the research being done on the computers today, the library does not currently have a whole lot of print resources like this. This would be a great single set to make for easy research for students. Accessibility/Diversity: This book covers every country from around the world providing quality information about different cultures and religions that are prominent in those countries.
