So here's the gatherer link for those wondering; Chainer's torment is actually a half decent card in a draft and cube. In other formats it's passable but definitely not worth mentioning as a build around. Being a saga, and benefiting from mechanics such as proliferate and counter manipulation, you can repeat the first (and second effect) many times in one turn. Rushing this saga to 3 is the best way to play this card however. As you have the potential for a 10+/10+ as early as turn 4 (provided you play turn 2 dark ritual, sol ring, or similar ramp effects) without counter manipulation. Overall, 4/5. |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-05-22 00:00:00 William Smith Much, much, MUCH better than the first Odyssey book, the author switch is exactly what was needed to tell this story in a much clearer voice. Sadly the third book gets an author change as well, and I hope and pray that doesn't foul things up again. Chainer is such a likable character and it makes his spiraling decline that much more painful to read, and Kamahl, you really have to feel for the guy, after all he's been through. Its no wonder he ends up making the eventual switch to the druidic way. |
