I have not read that much by William Kittredge, but I did enjoy an earlier book of autobiographical essays, which overlap some with this book. In this short book, he tells of his earlier years growing up on a ranch in Southeastern Oregon and later coming back to manage that ranch, before giving it up to become a writer and professor at the University of Montana. Other chapters talks about his beliefs on environmentalism and writing. A final chapter is written by Scott Slovik who gives an overview of Kittredge's writing to American literature.

Interesting, if not compelling, read. Some of the author's previous memoirs and ecological essays are reworked for this statement of his creed. The book contains the author's essay, a biography, and a bibliography of his writings.
