Want to turn a Halloween store prop into something even spookier? How about a barbecued skull? Want to learn how to make a two-way mirror? Light up a dark space with glowing black-light or give spooky eyes to a dark corner? What would it take to make fake vomit? Believe it or not, cream of mushroom soup. Who knew? This book contains many props and tricks by Haunted House maker enthusiast, Ken Pitek. He uses a combo of hand-tools, Halloween decorations and craft supplies to create an eerie haunted house. Difficulty level: Despite his step-by-step (and photo accommodations for each), this is for one of those hands-on adults. While many of the supplies are inexpensive, if you don't regularly have a lot of power tools or work with electrical circuits (they're simple but require a bit of work), this may seem overwhelming compared to buying various decorations that may offer similar effects. Aside from the difficulty level, the only other negative I have for this book is that I wish that he focused on other props. More than half of the book is "what can you do with a fake skull and how can you make it creepier or different" projects. So, take that as you will. However, the appendix of websites, supply lists and instructions are readily available throughout the book.

this is really 2 books. one is alma rubens drug-addled diary, and that is the best one as well. her own writing does not talk too much about her days as an early silent film star, but it is a sometimes harrowing look into what it was like to be a coke-head (or a snowbird) in the 20's and 30's. a really interesting read!
