Review # 1 was written on 2010-03-02 00:00:00 Roger Williams Very interesting book, not your common point of view. This is a series of stories written by a woman who spearheaded bringing new teaching techniques to Eastern Europe and the people she meets along the way. Told as first person narrative and interviews. If you find the everyday lives of people and their thoughts/experiences during times of great change and historic events interesting, this is refreshing read. It's not sweeping history and it's not focused on the large personalities so often mentioned in the context of the Fall of Communism and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It's the story of the citizens who lived under Communist rule in countries like Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and other countries and how they lived their lives, protected their children and protested in whatever form was available to them. If that period of history interests you and you've spent your time largely reading about the "leaders" and their version of the history... you will enjoy this quick read. |
