The 2nd edition of this title amends the factual inaccuracies and the harsh criticism of the 1st edition, in addition to including the more than 80 Lincoln-related films and television programs released since the 1st edition was published in 1999 (see ARBA 2000, entry 1182). While expanding upon new portrayals of Lincoln in film and television, Reinhart also includes previously overlooked films such as The Rivalry, Abraham Lincoln (1924). Much like the 1st edition, the work begins with an informative introduction that provides a historical overview of Lincoln's portrayals in film and television for the past 100 years. Recognizing that not all portrayals of Lincoln are equal, Reinhart delineates between cinematic achievement and historical accuracy in his introduction. He praises the two most famous Lincoln films, Young Mr. Lincoln and Abe Lincoln in Illinois, for their importance in the history of cinema, but is quick to point out that they are both historically inaccurate portrayals of President Lincoln. The entries following the introduction are arranged alphabetically, provide detailed film and television credits, and give a brief commentary on Lincoln's portrayal. Reinhart oscillates between scholarly works such as the Smithsonian's Great Battles of the Civil War and popular, comedic films such as Zoolander. However, the work is not exhaustive in scope, excluding tangential works such as appearances on The Simpsons. An index and bibliography of reference sources are available, as is a chronological listing of films and television productions. Although this updated edition is an improvement over the 1st edition and fills a niche, the narrow focus of the subject matter may not be appropriate for all libraries. For those academic libraries or museums that specialize in collecting presidential history materials and aim at comprehensive coverage, this text is necessary. Other libraries will find this work to be an expensive novelty in the reference collection.
