Review # 1 was written on 2020-10-27 00:00:00 D. Bruce Unfortunately, as far as I know, this is the only monograph on the mighty Larry Cohen in existence. Even more unfortunately, while it does contain some precious tidbits of information, it reads like a generously puffed-up and watered-down dissertation, with certain themes and motifs ("guerilla filmmaking", "comic book style", "return of the repressed") looped ad infinitum and ad nauseum. It's also out of print. Here are some scattered but infinitely better authorities on Cohen: Robin Wood, Olaf Möller, Emmanuel Levaufre, J. Hoberman, Fred Camper and The Club Havana Secret History of Cinema. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-02-25 00:00:00 Remington Chapman Full disclosure - Tony Williams was one of my instructors in college, and Larry Cohen was one of the many directors he featured in his classes. I was familiar with Cohen as the "It's Alive" guy, and knew a little of his work, but actually got to see some of it in class. Williams first published this study of Cohen (first one in book form, although there were articles by Robin Wood, a mentor of Williams, prior to this) in the mid-90's; this revised edition adds more info and work after that first publication - PHONE BOOTH, CELLULAR among others. There are other books on Cohen available, but I'd start with this one first. |
