Review # 1 was written on 2018-11-04 00:00:00 Kathleen Mitsopoulos Picked this up for the interview on Harry Eisenstat for a project, and read the rest of the interviews out of curiosity. It's essentially a series of interviews the author conducted in the mid-90s with former big leaguers who played in the vicinity of Babe Ruth. It would have been more accurate to group these as interviews by players who played with or against the good Tigers teams of the mid-30s. The author has somehow found a number of role players who were with the two pennant winners from Detroit, and the other players reminisced about those teams or played with the Tigers in the years immediately before or after. The connection to Ruth was slim, and some players failed to mention him at all. Oral histories are almost always worthwhile and he got some good stories. The fact that most of these players were in their 90s made for short answers, though, and they were quite repetitive as the author asked the same questions to each. And of course it got a bit tiresome hearing the older guys complaining about all the money in the game, how they're all lazy, blah, blah, blah. One of the players even said that about 300 current (mid-90s) players wouldn't have been good enough to play AAA ball in the 30s. Well, OK. That's one opinion.
