I have mixed feelings about this book. I appreciate that the author refrained from depicting graphic sexual situations or used inappropriate language. However, this book fell flat for me. Healing Heart follows the story of Angie, a young cosmetologist from Guam, who was raped by an unknown assailant at her local community college. Following this opening scene, readers follow Angie’s recovery, along with that of her mother’s and boyfriend’s. I felt like Angie’s mother and boyfriend, Jay, were smothering her with misplaced sympathy. Angie had just been through a devastating ordeal and they kept telling her that everything would be better in the morning. I’m sorry fictional characters, but abuse doesn’t work that way. It takes time to overcome these things. I also felt that the author made a mistake when she had Angie’s mother, and later boyfriend, share information about the rape with others. I know this is just a story, but if I had been assaulted I would not want everyone to know my business. That just isn’t something that should be shared by the victim’s family and friends; regardless of good intentions. The victim should be the ONLY one who can share his or her experience. I know I’m beating a dead horse with this point, but Jay and Angie’s mom just felt pushy. Be aware of this if you choose to read this novella. Another thing I disliked was that the characters felt hollow. Readers really don’t know much about Angie or Jay or Angie’s mother. In fact, Angie seems to be the only dynamic character in the entire story as she goes from believing that the assault was her fault to knowing that the rapist was really the one at fault. I think the reason why the characters fell flat was because this was the fourth book in the series and it didn’t really introduce us to Jay or Angie, but I digress. One thing I liked, even though it was given away in the beginning, was the tattoo which helped Angie to identify her attacker, alerting the police, which brought the creep to justice. The tiny mystery was great because it helped to boost Angie’s confidence. Also, I enjoyed Angie’s stay in Rocky Bluff. She needed a place to heal where she wasn’t being bombarded by her pushy loved ones. I do wish she would have been able to go back to Guam, maybe years after her marriage, to make peace with it all and make new memories.

The story itself was good, but there was a bit of head hopping which I found a bit confusing at times & there were also times when the story didn't seem to flow. The characters were well portrayed, the issue of rape & it's aftermath sensitively dealt with & the community of Rocky Bluff who reached out to Angie were wonderful.
