Ruth Scofield adds to Steeple Hill's Love Inspired collection of spiritually-themed romances with a nicely and humorously written tale of Ivy York, who was raised in poverty but now is a small business owner, who's hoping to find Mr. Right--but only if he meets her criteria. She meets Noah Thornton, a "gardener" in Ivy's words (although his description in the book makes him closer to a landscape architect) who's not worthy of her affection. Instead, she sets her sights on a client who knows Noah--Gerald Reeves, who's a local businessman/philanthropist. Scofield draws the characters fairly realistically, with the exception of the eccentric Aunt Arletta, who is a busybody and a nuisance at times. She volunteers Ivy's personal resources (her car, her shop) without asking first and gives away Ivy's clothes. This is not Christian behavior; it's simply obnoxious. Noah eventually proves himself worthy of Ivy in many ways; Ivy's desire for financial support is not entirely wrong, but she forgets that where her treasure is, there her heart will be also. The dichotomy between the rich (Gerald Reeves and his sister, Barbara) and the working poor (Noah) is written somewhat broadly here and the readers understand that Ivy will eventually learn her lesson. There are a few good supporting characters as well, including Ivy's best friend Kelly, who's newly married; Chad and Matt, friends of Noah's, as well as Shirley, Arletta's closest friend. A subplot of domestic violence goes nowhere, but does provide some character development for Ivy. This book is somewhat deeper in scope than some of the other Love Inspired titles, and is recommended.

Do you think you know what qualities you want in your perfect mate? Ivy does. Turns out, many of the qualities that she thought were must haves, were negotiable--and the ones she thought she wanted led her down the wrong path a number of times.
