The book talks about a little boy who is having issues with a bully, but is too afraid to do anything about it. In the end the boy stands up to the bully and so does his whole class. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-11-11 00:00:00 Christopher Lozano Main Characters: Max, Bertha, Fang Grade Level: 2 and up Summary:This book is about bullying and what happens when you stand up for yourself. Bertha is the meanest girl in school. She picks on all of the kids daily. She is mean to them and tries to take their things. Max, a main character in the story, is so afraid of Bertha that he begins to start taking the long way home just to avoid her. Max then gets his own dog, Fang. Bertha thinks that because she has been able to take everybody’s things in the past that Max will end up just giving her the dog if she bullies him bad enough. Max refuses to give up his dog to Bertha. In the end the kids all stand up to Bertha one by one and she eventually stops the bullying behavior. The kids realize that she isn’t that scary when you stop being scared of her because she is just a kid just like them. Classroom application: I really think this book would be good to use at the beginning of the year or in an anti-bullying campaign. Bullying is a huge problem in schools and I think a book like this would empower children to stand up for what is right. I also think that the teacher could refer to the book throughout the year as it would not be an easy one to forget because it is so relatable. |
