I loved this book as a young teen; the writing is clear and straightforward without being simplistic or immature and the story is an intriguing twist on a young love theme. I like/enjoy the main character, Ginny, very much, but it is the boy Asher who stole my heart. I re-read as an adult and find it just as lovely. The characters are realistic and relateable, not at all overdramatic. Strong themes of truth, individuality, acceptance, compassion, and love that resonate with teens and adults. It is just the right length; there is a second book that I have never been able to find a copy of but I would love to continue with these characters.

Far far too much story for the amount of pages -- there's just no way to fit ghost story and townsfolkiness and deception and five years' growth and backstory and Indian wars and historical setup and child abuse and sexual manipulation, and I'm probably forgetting something, into 150 pages -- but the author does an admirable job of the love stor(ies), at least. Or maybe I just have a Thing for mismatched relationships built on mutual admiration. & boys who finally come home. (6/18/11)
