A great apocalyptic concept spoiled by sophomoric writing and heavy-handed characterization, but hey the same worked for Jenkins and LeHay's "Left Behind" series. The plot had excellent potential to be more than it was. For a Washington insider (communications director for VP Dan Quayle), Nesbit betrays a very outside-the-beltway view of how things work. No wonder that place is so messed up. Or maybe it just reflects how Quayle and his team never knew what was going on...and were never effective. Sad to see believing Christians (the supposed good guys) portrayed almost as wooden and two-dimensional as the bad guys. The whole thing lacked subtly. Despite the obvious, hoping-for-a-sequel closing, Nesbit wisely decided to not continue the topic. I recommend he enroll in Jerry Jenkin's Christian writer's course and learn to write. One more comment: Writing in 1996, Nesbit seemed hopeful that Christians would learn and spread "the truth" (as opposed to engineered news) over the Internet. While that's theoretically true, during the last decade the blogosphere has become awash with trivia, urban legends and tripe. Unfortunately, Christians seem as undiscriminating about what they post as anyone else. And that, like the failure of Christians behave differently from the rest of the population, is not living up to their calling.

I liked this book once I figured out the characters. This was a great premise and a fast read.
