In the previous book Skeeve was busy looking for Aazh in his home dimension. At the same time the rest of M.Y.T.H. Inc. tried to stop expansionist plans of the Queen in Skeeve's dimension. The tale is told from a POV of a goon from the Mob currently employed as Skeeve's bodyguard Guido. He and his cousin Nunzio decided to enlist in the army trying to destroy it from within. The results were unexpected, to put it mildly. The view on the military of a Mob goon is amusing. Unfortunately "amusing" is as long as his book goes. It is never ever funny. What the heck happened to the humor of the guy who wrote first five books of the series that never fail to make me laugh out loud? This one was published at the same time as the first book of a new series, Phule's Company and both share a lot of common ideas: both are about misfits in the army. This theme was beaten to death and beyond even at the time both books were published. Both were equally unfunny, in my opinion. Does it mean Asprin did not have enough humor for both? The funniest parts of the series are misadventures of Skeeve accompanied by Aazh. Needless to say both are absent for the whole book. Tanda is probably next most interesting character and she got very little screen time. The same goes for young dragon Gleep. Skeeve's development in the previous book was boring, but he did develop. Nobody bothered doing it here. The whole plot can be summarized in two sentences as thus the book feels redundant. Still it was amusing enough to warrant 3 stars. Sorry, I could not contain my excitement.

Lite humor is sometimes exactly what the doctor ordered. In this case, there are very few of the MCs to be seen but that's perfectly okay. A little mob action is just fine. Indeed, it's more like Catch-22 mob-in-the-military action and it's just as absurd as you might think. And it's just as fun. I did say this was lite, no? It's feather-lite. Even forgettable, but while I'm reading it, I'm chortling, so it does its job well.
