Review # 1 was written on 2009-03-12 00:00:00 Fred Landgraf Reads like a modern day police hunt. However I did enjoy the use of the railroad, the army and the marshalls that kept the peace. I am still too much of a Louis L'Amour fan to have more to say about this book. It does want me to research some of the crimes committed in the book to see if they are true. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-10-13 00:00:00 Cheryl Ford Though certainly a better of Mountain Man tales, this one also regurgitates far too many scenes from past tales...and tales to come. I love the "ninja" act, but here it is again staged the same way with the same results. Ending similar to so many before it. The bad guys are way too much like previous ones. All doing the same deeds with the same goals. Appearances of previous characters are in the same roles and act as before. The plot of escaping prisoners is just a new trail to take to end up with previous Mountain Man tales. This volume appeared during the real Johnstone's time and here, again, I can't understand why new tales weren't written. There's so much territory to cover. I get readers are wanting the same Smoke Jensen and him to do the same old actions. That creativity is lost here. The characters, as always, are excellent, though repetitious. Specifically the bad guys are worn out. Writing is good. Though the lifting of earlier material, that will be lifted again in later volumes is irritating. I like the book, but later version of this same tale in the Johnstone Clan series are better done. Bottom line: i don't recommend this book. 4 out of ten points. |
