Public library copy. Tales is a collection of short stories rather than one complete story. All typical Miss Read, and lovely reading. Her writing talent is never wasted on the page, nor time spent reading. I have enjoyed my time spent in the rural villages of Fairacre and Thrush Green, centered around the experiences of daily life of the village schoolteachers. Would do us all well to slow down and notice the scenery of our lives.

I love Miss Read's books. This is one of her more minor ones - a collection of the essays she write about life as a country schoolteacher for magazines like Punch and the Times Educational Supplement - but still a pleasure for its scenes of English village life and her great ability to connect the reader to nature and the seasons.
