It was an interesting read but I am not particularly impressed. Some stories didn't seem to prize benevolence or make any moralistic points at all. The ones that did were very cliche. I should, however, remind myself that these are folk stories and I shouldn't have the same expectations for them as I would modern literature. It was interesting to find that the animals were regarded as people and could communicate with, and even marry, human beings. I wouldn't consider this compilation to be an accurate depiction of "Pakistani" culture, especially since Pakistan is a fairly new country. They make a point of saying in the introduction that they're mostly comprised of stories that have northwestern Indian influence.

Fun short stories. It helps to understand the history of the culture, and enlightens where many traditions came from and how they're played out. A good read for kids or adults wanting to learn more and expand their imaginations.
