I picked up this collection of American love poems on impulse from my local public library in February 2021 because Valentine's Day was fast approaching, because my partner had been an English teacher and because I always admired what a prolific and spontaneous reader he was. He passed away in July 2020 and now in February 2021, new varieties of sadness are much more of a companion to me than new varieties of things to love. The thought also occurred to me that maybe some love poetry would serve to drive out or at least dampen the internal noise that grief and sadness have had on auto-repeat in my head. I believe Simon would be glad that I can focus long enough to read anything again, even more so that I am intentionally venturing into different genres than I usually do. This is an eclectic collection of American poems written by men and women, both black and white. They are arranged chronologically and come from before the American Revolution up until the 1990s (the collection was published in 1999). The poems do not just reflect feelings of interpersonal romantic love but also love of country and of people who are not each others' paramours. Some are hopeful poems about new or desired love. Others reflect feelings of the pain that accompanies the loss of a loved one. In addition to the selected poems, this collection also contains brief biographies of the poets whose work is found within it. I was also pleased to discover a listing of other collections from the same publisher, Hippocrene Books, in the back of the book. After my experience with this one, I will be exploring additional collections they've assembled and published.

This book was written in 1984 from the perspective of someone moving to the middle-east and who may not be familia with some of the foods available. The book was well written but did not suit my needs.
