Review # 1 was written on 2008-10-01 00:00:00 Peter Armour Jimmy Harmon has been anticipating a summer camping trip for weeks, so when his father, a pastor, is unexpectedly called upon, he worries that the expedition will be called off. However, Jimmy and his Uncle Cully decide to go ahead with the excursion, and Jimmy’s father plans to join them when he can. Accompanied by Lassie, the duo sets off into Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. All goes well at first, until they stumble upon a seemingly abandoned cabin and a bald eagle that might hold the answer to hidden treasure. When they encounter a dangerous man with designs to attain a fortune for himself no matter what the cost, Jimmy knows that he must rely on God to help them, but Uncle Cully isn’t a believer. With some assistance from Lassie, Jimmy and Uncle Cully discover that not all treasure is monetary. “Lassie: Treasure at Eagle Mountain” is a short, inspirational chapter book intended to instill values such as courage in children aged 8 to 12. As such, it is an overtly Christian work of fiction, narrated in the third person but focused mainly on the thoughts and actions of Jimmy Harmon, the protagonist, and his struggle to trust God in times of adversity and to share Him with others. The plot is plausible but somewhat far-fetched in its execution, calculated to ensure a happy ending. Nevertheless, children will enjoy the mildly frightening action of the story and cheer for the loving collie and her owner. |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-12-11 00:00:00 Benjamin Ney A great book for young christian girls to see positive female role models from the Bible. The book was not overtly preachy, and each character was likable. A great read for younger students (7th grade down). |
