Published in 1978, the original printing was still available 30 years later from the publisher, so not a best seller. Written by someone who was there - it tells us the history of the southern Afro-American Congregations and districts of the Congregational and the Christian Church, and then the united Congregational Christian Churches up to the time of the creation of the United Church of Christ, when they were merged in to the regular (IE: white) districts. The author being involved in so much of this history on the plus side means that this material is now here as a primary (if time delayed) document. However, this also means that he downplays the almost walk-out of the Afro-Christian Church in the 1940s, and the difficulties after complete merger into the districts. The hints are there. You do need some knowledge of Congregationalism, Christian Church, and Jim Crow laws, before you read this book.
